The Sera Jey Class Room project

Sera Jey MonasteryClass Room project is one of the important projects proposed for developing the monastery’s commitment to further its educational curriculum. This project is primarily intended to provide a classroom facility to extend the existing Debate Court Yard, which is inadequate to hold all 19 class levels of the curriculum. Many of the 19 class levels previously had to hold their Debate classes outdoors, because of the large student population (about 2500). Outdoor classes were frequently interrupted during rainy season and summer heat. The actual classroom building provides the facility to conduct classes in the monastery’s main curriculum for our many enrolled students. This is the first of its kind in the monastery’s history.

The monastery believes the Class Room project will contribute to transforming our traditional monastic system of learning & imparting our heritage towards a more comprehensive and modern system that is compatible with our rapidly advancing world. Additional academic disciplines are introduced into the curriculum, such as the recent introduction of Science to the mid level stages, as of 1st of June 2012.

The monastery's all important Classroom Project has been a successful mission from all aspect - from construction to fund raising, where 70 % of the total cost estimate around 520.000 € (INR 44,157,190) have been successfully raised during the first Tour.

Photo images of completed classroom project are made available for the knowledge and viewing of all benefactors, supporters and friends of the Tour.

The balance of 30% of the cost estimate around 156.000 € (INR 13,247,157) is one of the two main fund raising program in this 2nd Tour of Compassion and Harmony.

At this initial stage, the utilization of the Classrooms are already in progress, providing classroom facility for regular Science classes, special classes and seminars. In the short future, it will provide facility for formal classes in English and Chinese Language besides Tibetan, which will be new study disciplines introduced into the monastery's traditional monastic curriculum in Buddhist Philosophy and Practice.
